Feel free to send me an email, faapiper@comcast.net Progress Well now that I sold some stuff I can finally start the building. Engine-The Brillelli 46gt will be the heart of the plane. Prop- I'm going to have a Master Airscrew Wooden 20*10 for break in, and probably a 20*8 or 21*8 for general flying. I know a composite prop will be better for 3d but I like to look of wood better. Spinner- I will be using a Dave Brown ultimate aluminum 3" spinner from tower. It should blend well with the cowling. Servos-The servos are (Tower Hobbies TS-160), I will have them on elevator and ailerons. The rudder will have a (Futaba s3306 large scale). It was lighter and cheaper to put one big servo for the rudder instead of 2 small ones. Radio- As for the radio I will be using my Futaba 6ex 2.4 system, which will have just enough channels. I ordered a RX100X from RCAT system that will work for a kill switch. Although I will have to solder on some leads because it doesn't come with any leads. http://www.rcatsystems.com/cube/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=4 Batteries- I have decided that i will have two batteries hooked through the receiver, one will be hooked through the battery slot in the receiver and one will be hooked in an extra channel. I will have a switch for each battery, that way even if one battery or switch fails I will still have power to the plane. I will have (2) 6v 2100mah nimh powering the servos, and I will have (1) 1500 mah nimh powering the electronic ignition.
12/9/07 I ordered a kill switch from RCAT systems so that should be here by the end of next week. http://www.rcatsystems.com/cube/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=4
Brillelli didn't ship my engine yet, I'm hoping he gets it out some time this week.
12/16/07 I received my Spinner today from Tower Hobbies, I also reveived mmy kill Switch from RCAT systems. I think that the RCAT systems kill switch is going to be much more durable than the opto one.
12/17/07 Finally, the heart has arrived. $375 with muffler and ch-electronic ignition. Can't beat that price, and I still haven't found anybody that doesn't like their Brillelli. He even runs it for 15-30 minutes before he ships it out. I hope to get it mounted tomorrow, and depending on how much time I have I might be able to start cutting the cowl by the end of the week. (I won't be bored this weekend :-).
12/18/07 I got the ignition installed today. I decided to mount it under the firewall because it is less likely to cause interference and it was super easy to mount there. I hope to get to the hardware store tomorrow and get some bolts for the engine mount. Very nice fit! Motor Mount, Made by Brillelli!
12/19/07 I got my mounting bolts today and got the motor mounted. It's a very sturdy set up, I really like the Brillelli mounts. I also installed fuel lines and the vent line. I'm still trying to figure out what I need as far as a throttle linkage set up goes. I will probably mount the throttle servo next to the receiver to try to keep the possibility of interference down. I won't need a choke servo or a choke extension because the carb will stick out far enough to manually operate it. I will probably cut the cowling tomorrow. I hope to get to the hobby shop friday and get the switch harness for my ignition and get whatever throttle set up I need.
Firewall from inside. Fuel lines installed. 12/20/07 I cut the cowling today. I am very happy with how it turned out, thanks to my dremel. I'm still debating on cutting a vent under the crankshaft for more airflow, but I did cut a vent underneath for airflow exit. The carb really stick out, but at least I can do all engine adjustments with the cowl on.
12/23/07 Today I got the flexi-cable installed for the throttle that I got at hobbytown friday. I also attached the canopy with silicone and 4 screws, I have rubber bands on right now to help the glue hold untill it dries. Not many people use silicone to glue canopies, but I have had very good luck with it in the past so I didn't see a reason not to use it on this plane. I am expecting my switch harness from tower hobbies to come some time this week. That will be for the ignition battery, which will be a 4.8v 1200mah nimh. The plastic clevis attached nicely to the cnc'd throttle arm that is standard with the brilelli. I used a standard futaba s3004 servo for the throttle.
12/27/07 The standard control horn on the servo didn't provide enough movement, so I installed a futaba aluminum control horn that was much longer. I plan to get my latest tower hobbies order Friday, then I can install my ignition battery and electronic switch that will work as an engine kill.
12/29/07 I added some "bling" to the Bling. I put all the included stickers on. I also added a Tri County Wing Snappers sticker, a Brillelli sticker, and a couple AMA stickers. I'm still waiting on my switch harness for the ignition from tower hobbies. I should get that monday. I have to solder in my RX100 switch that will be my engine kill switch. It's a bad picture but if you look closely you can see the brillelli sticker on the cowling.
12/31/07 Today I received my switch harness from Tower Hobbies. So I soldered in my RX100 switch which will be the engine kill. I installed my battery, switch, and electronic switch. Everything went very well, and I tested the system with a voltmeter to make sure everything worked properly. I will now be able to cut the electronic ignition from my transmitter, which is also a big safety thing. I got a chance to install the wheel pants today (very quick and easy). The Bling is ready for a engine test run tomarrow, NOT FLYING (as long as I can pick up some oil). I still have a couple of things to do before it is ready for it's maiden. I still have to check the center of gravity, go over every nut and bolt and make sure everything is tight, double check all the control throws, put locktite on the landing gear mounting bolts, and get a spinner nut. The wheel pants look very nice, but I don't know how they'll hold up. I'll probably end up taking them off in the future. If you look closely you can see the battery down in the bottom of the fuselage. It fit perfectly after it was wrapped in foam. I decided to cut a vent hole in the front of the cowl for better cooling in the summer.
1/1/08 I test ran the Brillelli today. I kept the cowl off today so I could adjust anything if needed. While my dad held the tail, I choked it untill I was fuel then I turned off the choke and turned on the ignition. about 20 flips later it was running smoothly. The needle setting's seemed pretty good, very smooth transition. I'm sure it will require some adjustment after break in. I did a range check with it idling and had no problems there. I also got a chance to weight it today, and with a very accurate scale it weighed in at 14.35lbs without a cowling and spinner. So it should be close to 14.5lbs when complete. Which isn't bad considering I'm using 2 nimh's for the receiver packs. As for the oil mix. I am running Stihl (chainsaw company) high performance oil at 40:1 for break in. After break in, which will be two gallons, I will run Stihl high performance ultra at 50:1. The difference between high performance and high performance ultra is that high performance is petro oil and ultra is full synthetic oil. All I have to do to complete the Bling is get the center of gravity right, it's really tail heavy right now. I also have to get a spinner nut, I had gotten one at the hardware store but the threads were too coarse. I had to put everything together to check the center of gravity. 1/2/08 I got the center of gravity worked out and it is right on now. The range that it should be in is 16-18cm back from leading edge. I'm at about 17.5cm right now. So I should have some easy hovering with this plane. (when I learn to hover :-) ) 1/3/08 We stopped by the hardware store today and I got my spinner nut. I installed it tonight. That completes the Bling Build. 1/7/07 The Bling flew! I flew the bling today at TCWS. When I showed up Mark, Ed Koch, and Terry Miller were there. I flew my Twist 3d and my parkzone spitfire before I got the bling out. I got it out and Mark and Terry looked it over, and after a good inspection and some mods (fuel tubing in the clevises) we were ready to go. With Mark holding the tail I hand started up the Brillelli. After we got it running I was ready to fly. I taxied out on the runway and throttled up. Off she went, very smooth and responsive. After about two laps she was all trimmed out. (not much trimming needed) Then when I was just over the driveway, Mark and Terry saw something fall. After doing one more lap around I was set up for landing. When I throttled back the engine quick (not intended), I was set up for landing (lucky) so it wasn't a real big deal. When I was about 10 feet above the runway Terry Identified the missing part as the left wheel. I landed as I normally would, and luckily it was muddy enough the the left gear just slid in the grass and didn't nose over. Luckily no damage was made, and when I get my new wheel I will be ready to fly again. (obviously with some engine adjustment) Click below for a video of the maiden flight! Send me an email if you would like to see the video and I would be happy to send it to you! 1/10/08 I ordered an axle set and two new wheels from tower hobbies. I also ordered some safety clips to keep my aileron servo leads from coming loose. I'll probably get them Monday and the Bling will be ready to fly again after some minor engine tuning. 1/21/08 I installed my new wheels, without the wheel pants. (they didn't fit). I also got the clips installed onto every plug. So I am ready to fly again. All I need now is some good weather. :-)
